permanent makeup is the art and science of implanting color into the skin. Using specialized instruments, permanent makeup artists place color inside the skin (dermis). This color will appear lighter after the healing process, once the top layer of skin (epidermis) flakes off. Because the color is placed in the skin and not on the skin, Permanent Makeup produces a natural, softer look overall.
What You'll Learn
Beginning courses teach aspiring permanent makeup artists how to apply eyeliner, eyebrows, and lip liner. Advanced permanent makeup courses cover full lip color, cheek blush, camouflaging, and skin repigmentation. All classes should include hands-on permanent makeup training with live models.
Degree Types
Permanent makeup training is available through cosmetic training facilities and certified private instructors and leads to a certificate or diploma. Permanent makeup continuing education courses are available as well.
Career Paths
With permanent makeup training, you can become a permanent makeup artist or supplement an existing career as a cosmetologist, electrologist, Esthetician, nurse, doctor, or tattoo artist.
Job Outlook
Permanent makeup is a lucrative, in-demand profession. According to the Society of Permanent Cosmetic Professionals, the cost per permanent makeup procedure averages between $400 and $800. Advanced work may be charged at $150 to $250 per hour. An initial procedure takes approximately one to two-and-a-half hours.
Licensing and Accreditation Information
Permanent makeup artists may take the national licensure exam for micropigmentation administered by the National-Interstate Council of State Boards of cosmetology (http://nictesting.org). Permanent makeup artists may also pursue professional certification by the American Academy of Micropigmentation (www.micropigmentation.org) or the Society of Permanent Cosmetic Professionals (www.spcp.org).
