Nail Technology

  refers to more than just manicuring and pedicuring -- nail technology is the art, science, and business of professional nail care. Nail technicians are experts in the anatomy of nails and skin, nail care and beauty techniques, and professional nail care products and their uses.

What You'll Learn
Nail technology programs cover manicuring, pedicuring, nail tipping and wrapping, nail sculpting, and more. In a nail technology program, you will receive theoretical instruction through textbooks and lectures as well as practical and clinical experience with models and actual patrons.

Degree Types
Nail technology and manicuring programs lead to a nail technology certificate or diploma. Continuing education in nail technology and manicuring is available as well.

Career Paths
Once you complete an accredited nail technology program, you can apply for your nail technician license. Nail technicians work in salons, spas, resorts, and more. Nail technicians can also go into business for themselves.

Job Outlook
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, continued growth in the number of nail salons and full-service day spas will generate numerous job openings for nail technicians. Employment of nail technicians will grow by 28 percent between 2006 and 2016. In May 2007, median annual earnings of nail technicians were $19,960.

Licensing and Accreditation Information
Nail technology and manicuring programs may be accredited by the National Accrediting Commission of cosmetology Arts and Sciences (NACCAS), which is recognized by the US. Department of Education as a national agency for the institutional accreditation of postsecondary schools and departments of cosmetology arts and sciences, including specialized schools.
