Make-Up Training Programs - Make-Up Training Degrees
by CB Staff
When it comes to working in the beauty industry,

make-up training

is a must before you can become a licensed cosmetologist. Depending on the state that you live in, proper make-up training may require anywhere from 1,000 to 2,100 hours of study.

What You'll Learn
Make-up training programs will teach you everything from how to apply make up, to what make-up styles look best on different kinds of faces. You'll work with a variety of different make-up tools, colors, and products, and typically gain first-hand experience by working in a school Salon with real clients.

Degree Types
Depending on the make-up training program you enroll in, you may earn either a certificate or an associate degree in cosmetology.

Career Paths
While many beauty professionals choose to work in salons and spas, you could use your make-up training to land a career as a professional make-up artist to the stars. Make-up artists are also essential for movies, photo shoots, TV shows, and parties. And if working on someone else's schedule doesn't appeal to you, you could always start your own salon or mobile make-up business.

Job Outlook
According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor and Statistics, employment within the beauty industry is expected to grow by 14 percent through 2016. While jobs for make-up artists, in particular, will grow by about 40 percent this translates to a few hundred jobs in practice as the make-up field is a smaller industry to begin with.

Licensing and Accreditation Information
In order to put your make-up training to use -- legally -- you'll need to become a licensed cosmetologist. Although exact requirements differ from state to state, in general you must complete a state-approved cosmetology program and have between 1,000 and 2,100 hours of make-up training. In order to be fully licensed you must all pass both practical and written exams in the state where you wish to practice. Make sure to check with your state government as you embark on your make-up training.
