| Facial Studies - Facial Programs |
| by Robyn Tellefsen |
Facials cleanse, exfoliate, and nourish the face to promote clear, well-hydrated skin. A professional facial involves cleansing, skin analysis, exfoliation, extraction, facial massage, masks, toners and creams, and advice on home Skin Care and products.
What You'll Learn
In facial programs, professional estheticians will teach you the art and science of performing many different kinds of facials, including European facials, mini-facials, and specialty facials such as acne facials, age defense facials, collagen facials, and oxygen facials.
Degree Types
You can earn a facial certificate after completing a facial program. A facial certificate signifies that you have completed a course of study specific to facials and that you are prepared to be licensed in the state in which you want to practice.
Career Paths
Cosmetologists and estheticians may choose to specialize in facials to capitalize on the increasing popularity of facial procedures. Those who pursue facial programs of study may work in a variety of places, including spas, health centers, resorts, or cruise ships.
Job Outlook
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment of estheticians and other skin care specialists is expected to grow 34 percent between 2006 and 2016 as more facial procedures to improve the complexion become available and more popular in spas and medical settings. In May 2007, median annual earnings of skin care specialists were $27,190.
Licensing and Accreditation Information
All states require facial specialists to be licensed. Requirements for licensure vary from state to state, but generally you must first graduate from a state-licensed cosmetology school and pass a state licensing exam. Check with your state licensing board before performing facials.
