Beyond Beauty School Basics: The Perks of Attending a Cosmetology School
by Paul D. Rosevear
The career of a beauty school student is loaded with excitement, opportunity, and many hands-on experiences -- you won't be spending all of your time learning with your nose in a book. But do you have the passion it takes to enjoy the perks of beauty school?

"The ideal student absolutely has a passion for the beauty industry," says Kim Brosdahl, vice president of marketing at Brooklyn Park, Minnesota-based Regency Beauty Institute. "They are creative, expressive, artistic, and desire to make the world more beautiful one person at a time."

Beyond your appreciation for beauty, you should also consider your learning style when determining whether or not beauty school suits your student personality. "Beauty students might learn more from hands on experiences than from reading a book, or maybe a four year isn't their thing," explains Brosdahl. "We have many students who start right after high school but we also have many that already have other degrees and are seeking a cosmetology license to move somewhere new in an industry they love."

If it sounds like those qualities match your personality, the perks of beauty school aren't far off. One of the benefits of beauty school is the intensive, hands-on training. "Our full-time students spend the first eight weeks completing classroom work and practicing on mannequins and willing friends or family members," says Brosdahl.

But nothing stays routine for long. In fact, that's another perk of the beauty school experience -- variety. "At Regency, students rotate weekly between performance on the clinic floor and the classroom for continued rehearsal and Cosmetology Training," says Brosdahl. Students continue to learn advanced theory and also get to see how that theory works in real life with services that are provided for guests, with lots of training and supervision from the educators.

In addition to instructor-led training, apprenticeships and internships are a large part of what being a beauty student entails. "Regency offers a unique program called The STAR Program which stands for Student Training and Rewards," she says. "The program provides a tangible way of tracking students' progress in specific areas that are important to potential employers, like guest satisfaction, service volume, and retailing. It also benefits the hundreds of salons and industry partners that hire our graduates. STAR performers will have opportunities to participate in local events, shows, competitions, and internships as they are available."
