Barbering is a technique of haircutting mostly used on men. Some women and children may also go to a barber to utilize their haircutting services. Barbering also consists of other services, including shaving, scalp treatments, and nail and Skin Care services.
What You'll Learn Students at barber schools generally learn the basics of barbering -- haircutting, shaving and trimming facial hair, hygiene, and anatomy and physiology. Barber schools basically prepare their students to pass a licensing exam, which is imperative to practice in any state.
Degree Types Those who pursue their study at barber schools will earn a certificate and can then go on to take their licensing exam in the state in which they would like to practice. Those who have attended barber schools may also choose to pursue additional certifications to give them a wider spectrum of skills and potential for jobs.
Career Paths Barbers who have graduated from barber schools tend to work in barbershops, hair salons, and spas. You may also find barbers in places like residential care homes and nursing homes. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, 46 percent of all barbers and cosmetologists are self-employed.
Job Outlook The job outlook, according to the BLS, is favorable and is projected to grow slightly faster than the average for all other occupations. As spas and salons continually increase, so too will the demand for qualified workers so those who have attended barber schools will likely secure the best jobs because those who have come from barber schools have gotten the tools they need to work efficiently.
Licensing and Accreditation Information Usually, barbers will need a cosmetology license in order to practice barbering in their respective state. This usually may be obtained after completing a course of study at barber schools and sitting for a barbering exam. There may be different requirements for licensing state to state so be sure to check with your local governing body.
