| An Attractive Career in Permanent Makeup |
| by Amanda Fornecker |
There's not one person out there who doesn't want to feel beautiful. That's why the Permanent Makeup industry is taking off and will continue to expand in the coming years. Though the trend has been around for a good while, the industry is becoming more and more realized and a career in permanent makeup can end up being extremely attractive.
What Is Permanent Makeup?
Permanent makeup began around 1980. But Jovahna Gonzalez estimates that the technique has been around since the 1800s. "Doctors used to do this back then," she says. "More people know about it now so it's growing." Gonzalez has been in the permanent makeup industry for more than 10 years and is now teaching permanent makeup, microdermabrasion, and nail techniques at the Vogue Beauty College (San Antonio, TX). While in college, she focused on fine arts and computer graphics, but it wasn't long until she studied cosmetology at the beauty Academy of San Antonio (San Antonio, TX).
Initially, Gonzalez began working with nails, but soon realized she longed to do something more. "I wanted to do something quick, fast, and that would make me money," she says. She combined her loves of art and beauty to work in permanent makeup. Permanent makeup is not used just to beautify, Gonzalez explains. It can also help those who have experienced hair loss, want fuller lips or eyes, and to camouflage skin damage due to burns or surgeries.
A Program in Permanent Makeup
Vogue Beauty College offers a permanent makeup program that will prepare you for your career. This 80-hour program offers basic techniques, such as eyeliner, eyebrows, and lip liner. A concentration is up to each individual student. Upon registration for the permanent makeup program, students receive a kit with all materials needed for their career, including the machine to do your work. "You leave here ready," says Gonzalez. "You've got your accessories and you leave with a diploma backed up by Vogue Beauty College."
Real-Life Advice
Gonzalez says that cosmetology is one of the largest industries out there. And permanent makeup is within that category, looking very promising. "Everyone is in a hurry all the time," she says. "They're going to bed, they're out, they're at the gym. And they want to look good all the time." Permanent makeup helps keep the trend in place. With more and more people seeking this type of cosmetology, the permanent makeup industry will continually grow, opening more jobs. Says Gonzalez, "There's a new clinic opening up almost every month here in San Antonio."
In order to succeed, Gonzalez says you need to immerse yourself in the field. "Put in the work," she says, "because it is something that can take you far." Probably one of the most difficult, yet important aspects of a permanent makeup career is getting the word out. "Advertisement is the main key. If you don't advertise yourself and the work you do, then everyone else will overcome you as a technician."
