| An Artistic Colorist |
| by Robyn Tellefsen |
He's worked with everyone from politicians, foreign dignitaries, and royal families to TV stars and musicians including the Foo Fighters' Dave Grohl and "Trading Spaces" designer Vern Yip.
He's Joey Noufal, 38, owner and color artistic director of Noufal Hair Studio (Tysons Corner, VA), a full-service salon offering professional Hair Design, advanced hair color and chemical treatments, skin care, manicures, pedicures, and makeup services.
Noufal didn't start out in cosmetology, though. An award-winning Hair Stylist and makeup artist with expertise in color application, hair cut techniques, effects of highlighting, corrective coloring, and Japanese relaxers, he entered the salon industry from an artistic angle.
"I have always been a painter, which gave me the opportunity to consider a career in hair color," explains Noufal. In fact, he earned a graphic arts degree with a major in communication design from Marymount University (Arlington, VA) in 1989, and he continues to create and sell original oil paintings.
Career Highlights
Once Noufal decided on a Colorist career, he went to great lengths to acquire as much education as possible. He obtained a state license, 1,200 hours of Cosmetology Training, and international hair color certificates all the way up to master colorist. He also became a Goldwell color educator, training other stylists in their own salons and at hair shows and seminars. All told, Noufal has more than 20 years of experience as a color educator to other beauty professionals.
As he affirms, a colorist career is anything but dull and lifeless. "Every day is a new day," he says. "The job is always evolving."
Listening to people and catering to their uniqueness is a key aspect of the colorist's craft. "There are different types of hair and personalities to fit people's careers or lifestyles," says Noufal. "It's always a fun challenge to find the right cut or color."
For Noufal, hitting a creative high note can be the best part of the job. "I love to color and create a style that fits the individual's face shape and skin tone, as well as their personality," he says.
Colorist Counsel
As a professional stylist, Noufal attends hair shows to stay current with trends and train his staff. "Continuing education is critical in this career," he says. "There are always new techniques, styles, and products to learn about."
Not only that, Noufal has also completed research in hair product development, as well as research and development on prolonging hair without fading.
He believes it's important to be at the cutting-edge of the beauty industry. "Trends and fashion play a big role in this business," he affirms.
In the end, an aspiring colorist should be an artist at heart. "Every colorist should know the color wheel and work hard on understanding color theory," advises Noufal. "What you see is not what you get in this business."
